Of the five patients, only two (patients 22 and 33) were successfully switched to nocturnal NV-PAP In one case (patient 7) this did not, however, correct the dSa02. Three symptomatic patients with more than ten 4%dSa02 episodes per hour also used inadequate periods of daytime aid and did not maintain normal daytime blood gas values with nocturnal BV use alone. Five of the 22 patients without apparent respiratory symptoms with nocturnal BV use also had a mean Sa02 of <95 percent. The Sa02 of three of these patients improved to >95 percent after switching to NV-PAP The other two patients continued to use BVs. In all, five of the 22 patients without complaints on their BVs said that they, nonetheless, felt better with less fatigue and showed improvement in mean Sa02 after they were switched to NV-PAP. The apparently asymptomatic patients switched to NV-PAP because their mean Sa02 was <95 percent and they had ten or more dSa02 episodes per hour using BVs, they wanted to sleep more conveniently with a significant other, or they wanted a ventilatory aid that was more convenient for donning or traveling.
