6 Tips On Enjoying Your Tennis Game, From A Singapore Mum

As a busy mother of two in my early 40s, I was not a very sporting person until I took up tennis a few months back. Now I’m totally in love with the game, and am improving every day. I would like to share with fellow beginner tennis players some thoughts on how to most enjoy their tennis:

1) Must have the passion and enjoyment when doing it. I found that I did enjoy tennis when I could hit the ball well. There was a sense of fulfillment and achievement. I look forward to emulating my best forehands, backhands etc

2) Don’t scrimp on getting a good coach. At least initially, you will need a good coach in order to pick up the sport correctly. Typically after 20 coaching lessons, you should be in a good position to continue your learning by practicing with other players. For a qualified Singapore tennis coach, look for someone with the correct experience. i.e. someone with a Singapore Sports Council (SSC) level 1 coaching certification at the very least.

3) Do find a group of friends whom share the same passion for tennis. Once you get a regular game going with your friends, you would find yourself looking forward to each week’s game. You may join a club or search around for a social tennis network. Some people also join social clubs devoted to tennis. Nowadays, I have a regular game going every week with my lady friends.

4) Observe the top players on television or at the courts, and learn from them. I enjoy watching my son’s coach teaching him. I would take notes mentally, and try to replicate the strokes or outwit my opponent the next time I am on the court.

5) Take time to ensure you get a suitable racquet with the correct string tension. This is one of the most important aspects of enjoying your game, so you should take time to seek a coach’s or tennis shop expert’s advice. In my case I was fortunate to have my husband advise me. Do not just buy the most expensive racket, as an expensive racket does not always equate to a good one.

6) Finally, I find the most important ingredient in enjoying my tennis is - simply to relax and have fun :) It is a game after all, so release all your anxieties and just enjoy your game.
